Wyatt and his men were exploring the Sonoma Plains when they discovered a large opening in the range that led to a hidden gold mine. The captain named the hole "Wyatt's Hole," after him. In 1865, Major General John Atherton arrived in Carlsbad from San Francisco with instructions to explore and map the area around Carlsbad. He noticed an abandoned ranch on Topaz Mountain and decided to build a fort there for protection against Indian raids. The fort was called Fort Atherton and it served as a military post until 1887 when it was sold to Colonel Charles Blythe. Blythe turned it into a hotel and began operations as "The Carlsbad Hotel." In 1897, he donated land at Topaz Mountain for the purpose of establishing a golf Links Club which would later become known as The Golf Course at Topaz mountain. Today, The Golf Course at Topaz mountain is one of Carlsbad's most popular tourist attractions. Gun sights first came into use on Topaz Mountain during World War I when troops neededTo aim their rifles accurately during battles near San Diego Bay. At that time, all soldiers had to carry their own artillery pieces which could only be reached by mountaineering through miles-long cliffsides! To make things even more challenging,1918 saw THE LOS ANGELES GALAXY Earthquake which caused extensive damage throughout Los Angeles County including parts of Carlsbad! Angered by what he deemed as government incompetence, Major General George Custer ordered his regiment (4th Cavalry)HQ right outside Of town directly onto Army property without any warning or preparation whatsoever!! 1/3rd infantry Regiment had already taken cover behind houses just outside town limits but no orders were given either commanding officer or unit commanders about this sudden move!!! This resulted in some very bitter Private lickings between companies over who got where first - endangering lives & limb !! As far as I'm aware nothing ever been proven BUT theories abound & everyone has an opinion... From what we know today events leading up TO earthquake took place within hours prior some say minutes before!!! So much for hindsight being 20/20!!! Gunsight usage then & now likely depended largely on available technology then not available today so must have been quite primitive back then too!

However, over time things began to improve with advances in transportation and communication technology. In 1912, Carlsbad became an incorporated city after voters approved a referendum asking for incorporation. This happened because there were no other municipalities within Imperial County that had requested incorporation and Carlsbad was seen as being important enough for inclusion. During World War II, Carlsbad played an important role in providing food for American troops stationed in Southern California. The food production capabilities of the town allowed for large scale production of munitions such as artillery shells and bombs which helped contribute significantly to America's victory over Nazi Germany during World War II
