Immigration began in earnest with the Gold Rush in 1849, when Americans came to CARLSBAD to find mines and gold beaches. Mining camps developed along the coast as prospectors rushed to get their hands on the new goldfields. By 1860 Carlsbad had 10 stores and 50 miners; it also had two churches and one school. The railroad reachedCARLSBAD by 1870; soon after many businesses were established including hotel/motel, grocery store/grocery depot, blacksmith shop, post office (1871), livery stable (1872), brewery (1875), hardware store (1901), sawmill (1905) and bakery/lumber yard (1910). By 1915 there were 30 buildings in town including 7 hotels/motels, 12 stores/depots of all types combined with 2 schools & 1 doctorate degree college teaching agriculture & mechanics etc., 25 automobiles available for hire (& this was before WWII!), 3 watering places viz., Carmel Valley Lake (/ˈkɑməlzdʒaːd/, meaning “valley of crystal” or “clear water lake”), Pacific Beach (/ˈpækətiːk/) just south of town & Solana Beach (/ˈsoʊlanəbæ/. Today's Solana Beach became part ofCARLSBAD circa 1886 when rancho solana y otras locales ceded control over it back to Mexico) making it possible for people from across North America to come together & call themselves "Carlsbadians". There are several reminders of the role that CARLSBAD played during its early years: numerous historical markers throughout town remind visitors of key events or persons associated with the community such as Captain John Sutter who founded Humboldt Bay Company here in 1868 or José María Narváez who built Carlsbad's first adobe cabin around 1840 Additionally some pedestrian crossings located throughout town commemorate pivotal moments such as When Californias Railroad Began Passenger Transport Here In 1870

In recent years, though, Carlsbad has come back strong with initiatives such as its new downtown development and efforts to make it a more artsful community.
