In 1969, Catamount Marina opened its doors and became home to one of America's first full time scuba dive sites! Canyon Lake is a reservoir in Kern County, California, United States. The reservoir forms the eastern border of the city of Bakersfield and the western border of the city of Lancaster. It discharges into San Joaquin River at Canyon City. The canyon walls are more than 1,000 feet (30 m) high and bisect the river's course. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish missionaries in 1821 who named it Rincon de la Sierra because they saw a ridge up ahead that looked like a mountain peak. In 1847, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill and quartz veins were found also in what is now Canyon City. These lead to increased mining activity around Canyon Lake which created water supplies for many people and businesses over the years. The lake has been used for fishing, boating, swimming, camping and birdwatching since its creation in 1922.

It was first discovered by farmers in 1864 and dammed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in 1926 to create an irrigation district. Today, it serves as a popular recreational spot for locals and visitors alike. The name Canyon Lake is derived from nearby Cedar Mesa National Monument which straddles the border between San Bernardino County and Riverside County. The monument features soaring peaks overlooking one end of the lake while adjacent Preserve contains forested hills that reach up to 6,000 feet (1,812 m). According to some sources, early white settlers named this place Cedar City because they thought the trees near where they lived would soon be covered with cedar branches. The first residents who lived around Canyon Lake were Native Americans who hunted animals on and around the body of water before European exploration arrived in North America. They probably did so because there are no other major lakes or reservoirs within driving distance of their territory. By 1800, however, Europeans had begun exploring California extensively and had discovered many new areas including what is now Orange County. One result was that early land owners began selling parcels of their properties all over Southern California for development into agriculture or ranching ventures which led to today's Anza-Borrego Desert Region being developed along either side of Highway 128 corridor from Joshua Tree National Park down through Palm Springs to Cathedral City Raynham Station Road - part of I-10 Corridor - flanked on one side by Imperial Valley Open Space Regional Park on behalf of Angeles Wilderness District; while on the other side canyon rimlands opened up for settlement near Glendale Heights – today’s Boyle Heights – after being explored by José Sepulveda during his failed attempt to find gold at Serna Falls in 1849! Canyon Lake is a reservoir in the Angeles National Forest, located northwest of Los Angeles. The lake was created by damming up San Joaquin River below Butte Pass and east of Mount Wilson. The first recorded visit to the area was in 1847 by Captain John C. Fremont, who named it after Canyon Spring near his Rancho San Bernardino. In 1892, the United States Geological Survey renamed it Lake Arrowsmith after General George Armstrong Custer's battle at Little Bighorn ( soundtrack ).
