Canyon Lake is a small, picturesque town in the Sacramento Valley of California. It was founded by American pioneers in 1851 as a landing for wagon trains coming down the Sacramento River. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s and soon became an important bedroom community for the high-status residents of Sacramento. In 1925, Canyon Lake became part of the newly created City of Rancho Cordova, which was located east of Sacramento on what is now Interstate 5. Because there was no expressway connecting Rancho Cordova to Sacramento, many people commuting to work or other activities located in Rancho Cordova had to travel west on I-5 to get to their homes in Canyon Lake. This led to increased traffic and congestion on I-5 and made it difficult for drivers to get around town without taking shortcuts. In 1957, Park Associates began developing Canyon Lake into an attractive shopping center with a wide variety of shops and services available. The development allowed Park Associates more control over the area and allowed it to become one of the most popular shopping destinations in Northern California. Today, Canyon Lake remains an important shopping district in Northern California with a variety of stores including Sears, JCPenney, Macy's, Kmart, Sears Roebuck & Co., Kohl's Department Store, Applebees Restaurant/Barbecue Place and several dozen smaller businesses.
