Canyon Lake is a small town in Kern County, California, located on the north bank of the river San Joaquin. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The first gun lights were installed in Canyon Lake in 1917 by Capt. Clarence A. Hargrave and Lt. George W. Pogue of the United States Coast Guard as part of an effort to reduce accidents on the riverboat navigation system. In 1920, Captain Hargrave donated five pistols to be used by constables and other law enforcement officers in Canyon Lake; these pistols are still kept current and are regularly used today by deputies with the Kern County Sheriff's Department and other local law enforcement agencies throughout Kern County. In 1951, Driscoll Electric Company became operational and began manufacturing lighted signs for various businesses in Canyon Lake; these Signs remain in use to this day and can be seen from many directions within Canyon Lake District Park (which includes much of downtown). In 1957, The Jardine Companies purchased Driscoll Electric Company assets; this led to the development of Jardine Industries which continued production of electric signs into recent times!
