Canyon Lake was first known to the American Fur Company as part of Rancho de las Pulgas, located in present-day San Bernardino County. In 1848, the company sold the ranch to Manuel Micheltorena and his wife María del Carmen Valle for $6,000. The Valleys renamed it Rancho Canyon Diablo. In 1853, Micheltorena subdivided the ranch into 20 sections and assigned each section a post office name based on a nearby peak or canyon: Deer Park (now Big Bear Peak), Valley View (now Half Dome), Canon City (later Yosemite National Park), and so on. In 1903, following the completion of US 50 between San Bernardino and Yosemite National Parks, Canyon Lake became one of the several driveways along this route. As traffic increased on US 50 during the early 21st century, engineers began planning ways to improve access to Canyon Lake from various points around town. One solution was to build a new road connecting Coyote Hills Road in Crestline with Highway 395 in Turlock. Another was to install an earthen embankment at one end of Canyon Lake so that vehicles could not enter or exit the lake without first passing through a large gate constructed at another end. The project earned approval from local officials in 2008 but construction never started due to budgetary constraints. A new agreement was reached late last year which would allow funding for construction of an all-weather waterway east of canyon lake if rains fall within certain limits over upcoming weeks
Canon City was founded by Captain John C. Fremont on July 4, 1849. The town was named for Canon Manuel Folsom who had served as Sheriff of San Diego County from 1846 to 1850. The first post office in the town was established on February 14, 1850. Fremont built a cabin and called the settlement Canon City because he thought that it would be easier to find people living near him than if he had named it after himself. On November 8, 1860, while Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer was leading his cavalry unit against the Sioux at Little Bighorn, Canon City came into view on a hill east of the agency known as Gros Ventre (meaning "Buffalo Hills"). This sight likely inspired General Custer's decision not to pursue the Sioux and instead retreat back toward Fort Riley
