It is located on the edge of the Mojave Desert and has been known for its citrus fruit production since 1876. The first European to visit Campbell was Don Pedro Vasquez de Cuellar in 1775. He named it San Pedro de la Cruz for a convent that he saw near Chihuahua City in Mexico. In 1876, Joseph Akeley leased 5 acres (2 ha) of land from J.P. Morgan for $100 per year and began growing oranges there. The Aleyes were among the original settlers in Kern County and are buried at an unmarked grave in Campbell Cemetery. In 1915, entrepreneur Winton Hogg bought 10 acres (4 ha) of citrus trees from J.P Morgan for $5 per acre and started canning fruits there as well as selling bottled water and ice cream made from local fruit products like oranges and apples. By 1922, Hogg had built a large orange orchard with his own packinghouse that processed over 2 million pounds (1 million kg) of oranges each year according to company records. Dale Chapman became interested in this business after moving to southern California from New York City when he discovered orange juice being sold at convenience stores throughout Los Angeles County on credit cards rather than as part of a purchase deal like milk or bread would be back then.(Chapman remains one of only two people to have his name associated with both Coca-Cola bottlerships)(*Aiken).
