Campbell is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of San Francisco Bay and straddles the border of Contra Costa and Marin counties. The name Campbell comes from two sources: one originates fromCaptain John Campbell who fought in the Mexican-American War (1846-48), while another originates from an early settler named Andrew Campbell who arrived in 1849. On July 24, 1850, James Brouncker of Sacramento sold 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land to Andrew Campbell for $5 per acre. This initial purchase set off a larger transaction that would result in the formation of what is now Contra Costa County. In 1851, Captain John Campbell donated 4500 acres (1600 ha) to the county for use as open space. In 1859, Josephine Crain bought 7500 acres (3000 ha) adjoining Rancho Seco which included present-day Happy Valley and part of Hercules Heights. She founded Camponoldale College there in 1860 but it did not become operational until 1865 when her husband Drury moved his medical school from Southern California toCampbell. The first post office opened at Camponoldale on July 15, 1861; it was renamed Pleasant Hill after Colonel Daniel Pleasant Hill who served as military governor during Californios war with Mexico that year. The first store was built on Main Street by Mrs Alexander Macdonald in 1865; it became known as Pacific Avenue Stores after its location changed several times before becoming what is now Campbell Middle School building #2A on November 3rd 1969. In 1870 Congressman George Hearst acquired 342 acres (150 ha) near Happy Valley for $27 per acre which he called "Hearst's Ranch". He used it mostly for ranching and agricultural purposes but also built a large mansion there including a summer home and other features still seen today such as the main western gatehouse and eastern wing which are now part of Hearst Mansion State Historic Park . His daughter Beatrice married Charles Wickersham Riggs who ran an insurance company and soon developed some vineyards around their estate called Redwood Vineyards candling District Winery & restaurant . After her death he divided his estate among his four daughters with differing amounts given to each since they all shared equal management rights over their individual parcels until she died intestate without children in 1940 . However her mother Eleanor inherited more than she could manage so Eleanor subdivided her portion into 62 parcels giving each family about 50% ownership share with beneficial powers over vines births water usage etc.. 275 years later we have 5 active wineries/restaurants within 10 miles covering many different styles including pink or red wine
