In 1881, The Southern Pacific Railroad arrived in town from Stockton and began construction of a line from Yosemite Valley to Palm Springs via Campbell. The railroad had been looking for a place to build its own Depot because it could not find any suitable land contiguous with its tracks outside of San Francisco Bay Area towns like Concord and Daly City which then became American cities due to annexation by those citys during the Gold Rush era (1848-1858). The depot opened on February 8th, 1882 by First Vice President James Kappenberger with goods arriving weekly from Oakland through downtown Campbell until May 6th when an express train service began running between Oakland and Carson City which continued through downtown Campbell until December 1st when it ended at Needles along Ninth Street north of Interstate 15. On January 10th 1886 an all-night train ran between Needles and Reno also stopping at Camp Floyd south of US 395 near Big Bear Lake before continuing north along I-15 to Oroville where it connected with another all night Train heading south originally en route back up into America but ultimately terminating just east of Tomales Bay off State Route 17 about 12 miles southwest from where it started This day marks one hundred years since the first trains stopped atCampbell!
