Campbell, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. It is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Bakersfield and about 26 miles (41 km) west of San Bernardino. The first settlement in Campbell was made on October 15, 1868 by James A. McKay and his family from what is now the city of Yucaipa. They named their new community after General John Campbell who had led American forces during the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of Arizona Territory. In 1869, McKay traded goods with the Arroyo Grande Valley Indians to gain access to their land which he then developed into a village called "Campbell". One of the early settlers in Campbell was Hiram Sibley who arrived in 1870 from Illinois with his wife Anna and two children. He built a cabin on the banks of the river that same year. Sibley became an early leader in local politics and helped found the Campbell Republican Party in 1876. In 1902, Jenssen Brothers new mill started operations downstream from where they currently stand onthe current site of downtown Campbell. This mill added much needed jobs to the town during World War I and World War II when production shifted from outside Bakersfield to build military equipment here at home including tanks, planes, artillery pieces and more importantly munitions necessary for both wars effort. The mill closed its doors for good in 1954 but continue to be commemorated through various efforts like Route 66 Museum which operates out of downtown Campbell today
Campbell is a small town located in Northern California, United States. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley, about northwest of Stockton and southeast of Sacramento. The first people to live in Campbell were the Ohlone people who occupied the area for over 10,000 years. In 1848, Rancho San Joaquin was granted to George Armistead from Mexico by President James K. Polk. A year later, it was sold to John C Giles and his brother-in-law Eli Whitney for $5,000. In 1850, John Day founded a cattle ranch here that became one of the largest in California. In 1857–58 an expedition led by Captain David Wickersham explored what is now Yosemite National Park; he named it after General Philip Harnett Armstrong (1768–1843), Commandant of San Francisco's Alta Californiana Battalion during the Mexican American War (1846-48). The town began to grow when goods arriving from California arrived on covered wagons through Route 1 at an increased rate beginning in 1859; local entrepreneurs organized wagon trains carrying goods up and down the valley on their way back and forth between Stockton and Sacramento along today's State Route 494. In 1865–66 Lieutenant Colonel Jesse Winchester built Camp Sherman near present day Campbell as part of Fort MacArthur Army Base during World War II; afterwards it served as a U.S Air Force base until it closed in 1992. During its time at campground there were numerous airshows which attracted many thousands of visitors each year including Don King Jr., Neil Armstrong and Jerry Lewis
Campbell is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas–Temecula Metropolitan Statistical Area. Campbell began as an agricultural community in 1872 on the west side of Coyote Creek near its confluence with the San Joaquin River. A post office was established in 1875 and changed its name to Campbell in 1895 after J. Fenton Campbell, who donated land for a town site on Coyote Creek that became known as Campbell. The first store opened in 1899 and soon afterwards other businesses followed such as a livery stable and a tannery. By 1910, there were six stores and two churches in Campbelltowns which spanned three blocks along Coyote Creek Road. In 1914, local citizens organized what would become the Valley District Council which would manage village affairs including building roads and providing social services like education and health care. In 1916-1917, World War I interrupted commercial development so new housing projects were started such as duplexes and barracks for soldiers stationed at Camp Veteran’s Park just east of town on Humboldt Parkway across from Ulysses S Grant High School; these barracks are now home to ANG (Air National Guard) troops during wartime days when campgrounds are unavailable or too close to military sites
