Campbell, California is located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California and is bordered by Nevada to the east, Arizona to the south, and Baja California to the west. The population of Campbell was 5,491 as of July 1, 2010. It was founded in 1876 by a group of Mormon pioneers who set out from Brigham Young's Utah Territory. The town became a small farming community with a population of about 100 people before it grew into an agricultural center during World War II when production of fruits and vegetables increased due to air defense concerns. After the war, Campbell experienced rapid growth thanks to its location on I-5 and its access to other markets. By 2000, however, Campbell had shrunken back to its pre-war size with only 2% of its population living there. The history of Campbell begins with early Mormon settlers who arrived in 1876. These pioneers were led by Captain John Sitton and his men who were seeking new land for their religion after they had been driven out of Utah Valley following Brigham Young's decision not to allow them to build temples along the Great Salt Lake shoreline. When they reached what is now eastern Mojave Desert they found an area that was rich in mineral resources which helped spur their efforts in developing this new territory. In 1881 Captain Sitton divided the original settlement into two camps: one for men under his command and another for women and children under house arrest because he believed that polygamy would be outlawed under American law at that time. Between 1881-1892 many families moved from central City (at present downtown) because irrigation canals were being built through Canyonlands National Park which extended all around today's city limits including parts within Today's North Las Vegas Boulevard/Las Vegas Strip neighborhood! Some early residents also engaged in cattle drive operations across Monitor Mesa north of today’s city limits!Following Captain Sitton’s death in 1888 his widow Elizabeth Covington continued leadership until her death four years later when her son Benjamin took over leadership duties until he too died young at age 30 just shy of 40 years old! At age 50 years old Benjamin Jenson became responsible for governance until his own death at 91 years old! His wife Martha Jenson then assumed leadership until she passed away at 95 years old!!!It should be noted that Nathan Gunnison served as interim leader during this time period !!!In 1893 citizens elected George Witte as first Mayor; he served until 1899 when Sheriff Harry Hager took office !! From 1899 thru 1902 citizens elected Drury Peebles as second Mayor; he served until 1907 when voters chose James Atherton as our third Mayor !!!!!!After 1907 Mr Atherton resigned due to health reasons !!!On January 6th 1912 local resident William Tatum organized a Citizens Committee called “An Organization For Betterment Of The People Of Carson City” consisting mostlyof farmers & ranchers)to promote better conditions within town Limits especially pertaining To streets etc., water rights etc….the committee met monthly from then on !!! On November 28th 1913 members organized themselves into a Town Council formed pursuant thereto…..the firstTown Council meeting was held on December 3rd 1913…………………………..On February 17th 1914 incorporation papers were filed with County Clerk Charles Fenton setting forthThat company namecampbellcraigslistorgwas formed!!!!!!!!!!!!! By 1915 most businesses/enterprises had been started so it wasn't much different than it is today…………………..it should also be noted that priorTo 1914 there weren't any roads or proper transportation available so folks either walked or rode horses
Campbell was founded by Captain James Campbell in 1844. The town was named for the Campbell family, who had originated in Scotland. The first post office was established in 1845, and the first school was built in 1848. In 1870, the town became a city.
