Sometime in the late 1800s, a gun magazine was born in Campbell, California. The first issue of this magazine was published on December 1st, 1892. At that time, the Gun Club of America (GCA) had just been founded and there were no regular issues of magazines available to members. To fill this need, the GCA printed its own issues which it distributed free to all who subscribed. The popularity of these magazines may have been due to their unique design or to the fact that they catered specifically to shooting enthusiasts in Northern California. Regardless of the cause, these magazines quickly became a fixture in many local Rifle Clubs and Pistol Clubs across the state. By 1903, there were over 100 different Gun Club publications statewide! Eventually, the GCA disbanded and new organizations formed which could not reprint GCA issues because they were copyrighted by their predecessors. However, many old issue copies are still extant today and can be found at various firearm museums around the country.

Campbell is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 24,876 at the 2010 census. The town of Campbell was first established in 1853 by Captain James Hall and Wm. Fenton as part of the Rancho Las Avisitas grant given to them by Governor José Joaquín Murrieta. The site for what would become Campbell was chosen for its central location on the Sacramento River between Stockton and Alameda Counties, its access to water resources and its natural beauty. In 1864, the City of Sacramento agreed to annex Campbell into their city limits but the annexation never took place because there was no vote of approval from the citizens of Campbell themselves. In 1903, when various farmers in Alameda County began to sell produce out-of-town and establish markets in Campbell, they petitioned local officials to have their product taxed at a higher rate than products sold within city limits. This request was denied because it conflicted with government policy that taxes were levied only on goods that were consumed within city boundaries. In 1916, fire destroyed most of downtown Campbell; as a result, Mayor Jock Sutherland ordered all businesses closed until further notice so that firefighters could damage or rebuild any buildings which still stood. During World War II (1939-1945), Campanile High School became an important training ground for military personnel from nearby San Francisco Bay Area cities such as Oakland and Emeryville who served in Europe during World War II. When Campanile opened its doors for classes on September 9th 1944 following three years of construction by students and staff member Dick Rasmussen (class valedictorian), it marked not only an important milestone but also an occasion which would be remembered through time as one of American high school education’s greatest achievements; ever since then “Campbell has been synonymous with excellence” said Rasmussen himself after his retirement from teaching at Cal State Fullerton where he had been interim superintendent since 1984 Today's Gavin High School is located just east of downtown Campbell off I-680/Highway 362
