Campbell, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It is located in Yuba County. The first European to visit Campbell was José Francisco De Anza on September 25, 1827. He named it San Susana de las Nubes because he saw an eagle fly over the mountain and thought it looked like a cloud. In 1873, the United States Army built Fort Belknap to protect settlers from robbery in the valley by Mexican bandits. The fort was abandoned in 1901 and then used as a potato field until 1949 when it was turned into an agricultural research center or Intermountain Research Station (IRS). In 1957-1959, IRS employees moved all their equipment HERE from Redding so that Campbell could be designated as "the experimental station of choice for high altitude studies of soils and plants." The IRS still uses some of its materials here today including soil simulant tests which are used to study water availability and sorption properties among other things.
Campbell was founded in 1849 by a man named John Campbell, who named his ranch "Campbell Springs." The community rapidly grew and soon became a popular stopping place for stagecoaches. In 1874, the townsite of Campbell was designated as the county seat of Kern County.
