The grant allowed for grazing rights on more than 1,000 acres (400 hectares). However, only 10 years later, John’s son-in-law James Irvine built a mill atpresent day La Jolla that began grinding wheat flour for local consumption. By 1860, there were about 100 people living in Campbell; however, this population increased rapidly due to Irish immigrants coming to work in the mills and Agricultural Adjustment Act bounties from Washington D.C. For many years until World War II, though agriculture declined significantly due to mechanization and other factors such as oil exploration and production elsewhere in central California.,the community remained largely self-sufficient with its own schools, churches and hospitals.. In 1907 after incorporation into city government by then Mayor Atherton Hinson., growth resumed with new housing developments being built all around downtown including Hunters Point Shipbuilding Company on present day Pier 15 across from City Hall/City Park where public works department meetings were held until 1978 when they moved out onto nearby Ellis Island Grounds.. Growth continued through World War II with international shipping clients being attracted by abundant water resources hereabouts; however manufacturing halted following war's end leaving much of central CA struggling economically until recent times Most recently since 2000s there has been significant redevelopment taking place both within & outside of downtown while some smaller projects have also taken place like Paseo del Rio which connects Downtown & Boyle Heights Rancho San Pedro de la Alameda Mexican Land Grant 1861 - 1893: According to patent application #879 dated January 25th 1880 from Leland Stanford Jr.: "Grantees include Gov't Of Mex America And His Associates…also sectional partners From Baja Californias."
