The first humans to inhabit Campbell were the Mono people who lived there for over 10,000 years. The Mono people were Ohlone and arrived in what is now Inyo County about 6,000 years ago. They built their first village on top of a hill near present-day Interstate 5 and developed a hunting and gathering culture that relied on sea lions for food and trade goods. In 1853, Mormon missionaries discovered gold in nearby Sutter’s Mill but did not believe it could be mined because of the difficulty of finding jackals (a common find) among other materials found in the mill workings. The Mormons began prospecting for gold in earnest in 1854, discovering more than $10 million worth of gold dust before leaving for Utah with their discoveries. However, they abandoned their plans to mine at Campbell when they learned about the discovery at Sutter’s Mill. Over time various businesses have been located here such as cattle ranches and agricultural land holdings until 1923 when Campion Air Force Base opened up providing employment to many local residents during World War II; however by 1957 all military activity had ended makingCampbell an agricultural community again In 1960, Campbell became home to America’s first international airport when John F Kennedy made his last visit to Los Angeles International Airport before being assassinated less than two months later while traveling through this area Finally after much backfilling and restructuring Campbell lost its status as an agricultural community when county coffers dried up following passage of Proposition 13 which reduced property values throughout California greatly reducing jobs available here while also destroying important cultural artifacts like Mission San Gabriel Arcangeleno Chapel which served as both a church and school from 1951-1965 due primarily to budget constraints . today much though remains including several buildings from that era still standing along I-5

In 1868, the city of Sacramento was founded nearby, and Campbell became its first incorporated municipality. By 1890, it had a population of 2,500 people and was home to two churches and a school. The growth of agriculture in the area during the early 20th century caused many businesses to close or move out of town, and by 1930 only 100 people lived in Campbell proper while 1,000 businesses operated within its borders. However, during World War II Campbell saw an increase in military activity as it became one of the key supply points for California's war effort; between 1942 and 1945 the population tripled to over 10,000 people. After World War II ended there were steady declines in housing prices throughout most of Northern California due to postwar restrictions on oil production which led to decline in local businesses' profits which then drove up prices for goods exported back into Northern California (a phenomenon known as "the curse"). However, values remained high enough for some developers to build new neighborhoods such as North Park which quickly gentrified with high-priced homes becoming available for purchase among wealthier residents after years of being out of reach for most locals. In recent decades many smaller businesses have closed down within Campbell because they can't compete with larger companies that have relocated elsewhere or opened larger stores inside large shopping malls outside Of town like Jacksons Valley or Rosedale Estates - all located much closer to larger urban areas yet still providing access to smaller business districts just minutes away if needed). Some notablesmaller businesses that remain include: KFC (closed 1984), Safeway (closed 2006), Pizza Hut (closed 1990) and Tim Hortons (opened 1997).
