On November 1st 1853 John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on Point Mugu (now part of Santa Paula) opposite modern day Ventura City for military purposes against Mexican borderlands invasions led by Joaquin Murrieta. By 1860 most of what became Ventura County had been organized with 12 towns: Fillmore (later named after General José Avilés fillmore), Santa Paula (later renamed after Commodore John Davenport), Vineland(later renamed after George Copley Vineland), Menifee(later renamed after Thomas Fenton Menifee), Harbord(later named after Nathaniel Hawthorne Harbord), Carpinteria(later named after Nicholas-Jacques Carpentier). In 1865 Elisha Gray started an oil refinery near where he lived in Fillmore which became one of Southern California’s largest employers until it closed in 1979. That same year saw Don Wahlstrom open his camels for market transportation between Petrolia and Downtown Lodi; this commenced the horse-drawn carriage industry that continues today along State Route 154 between downtown Lodi and Canoga Park outside Woodland Hills – one mile past today’s intersection with Interstate 5 – until we reach Encino services now provided by Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus rapid transit service across two stations at Tarzana Boulevard/Highway Medical Center Road/Everest Avenue in Lynwood and North Hollywood/Curtis Hennig Road/Lincoln Boulevard inside Hollywood Hills serviced by Gold Line light rail lines running above ground through dense commercial areas separating these areas from Beverly Hills down into central Hollywood.)
