The first inhabitants of what is now Camarillo were Native Americans who lived on the island where the town was later founded. After the Spanish abandoned California for Mexico City in 1769, many natives migrated to Alta California (the current Mexican state), including some who settled on an Island near present-day Monterey called Isla de la Cañada Blanca (White Mountain Island). In 1775, Juan Bautista De Anza discovered and explored this area while exploring southern California searching for a route to Manila Bay; he named it Isla de la Cañada Blanca because of its resemblance to a white mountain. Joshua Camarillo arrived at Santa Barbara County about 5 years before Captain James Cook sailed into English Harbour on July 26th 1788 during his famous circumnavigation of America. He likely came ashore hereabouts as part of his exploratory mission from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel which took place some 25 miles northeast of modern day Solana Beach along State Route 1A approximately one mile wide just south east of Back Bay Beach when tide levels allowed only about three feet deep water depth access from shoreline up until high tide maximum thereby making bay entry very difficult even at low tide especially during stormy periods when tidal waves could reach heightsup to six feet high resulting sometimes dangerous conditions for those attempting passage) While there are no records or artifacts remaining today that support such claims any evidence remains that Joshua may have visited or resided hereabouts while conducting his exploration activity as one possible explanation befitting someone so highly placed within early 21st century coastal Californian society with knowledge both old and new concerning maritime activities occurring then & contemporaneous with purported visit by Captain Cook would make sense given history’s repeated patterns/occurrences suggesting perhaps greater than average interest & notoriety our region then & currently garnering
