Camarillo, California is a small town in Kern County, California. It was founded in 1853 by Mormon pioneers and named for José Camarillo. The population of the town was 4,500 at the 2000 census. In 1907 it became the capital of Kern County. The first post office opened in Camarillo on January 3, 1853. The town was platted on November 15, 1850 by John Wesley Powell and contains evidence of occupation as early as 1824 when Spanish traders noted an area rich in gold veins near present day Camarillo Creek. By 1860 there were over 100 residents and businesses in what is now downtown Camarillo. In 1871 William Ellison donated land to the county for a courthouse and jail which opened in 1872. The first courthouse building still stands today and is used as the district attorney's office today. Along with other county buildings including a jail and schoolhouse, this structure served as the foundation for what would become downtown Camarillo which began to grow rapidly during the late 19th century thanks to industry growth within Kern County and easy access to water supplies from nearby rivers including Coyote Creek (now part of Rodeo Lake) and San Joaquin River. By 1912 Camarillo had annexed much of unincorporated territory west of its current boundaries including portions of Bakersfield, Delano Heights, Glenn Oaks, Huntington Beach, La Puente Hills Rancho Seco east of Interstate 5 south of I-5 west of Katella Valley Road (now State Route 92), Willow Springs Ranch east off State Route 82 north off Interstate 5 between Kingman Lake Rd./State Route 178/I-5 south near Wacoita Lakeshore Rd./Napa Co., etc). These annexations created more than 12 square miles (30 km²) outside the original city limits while increasing its population by more than 1000%. During World War II many residents relocated to inland areas such as Redding or Porterville due to air raids however most remaining citizens participated actively or passively in local government until after World War II ended when business activities moved away from agriculture towards services such as education and defense industries which continues into present day; culminating with CAMARILLO BEACH - A CENTER FOR TRANSPORTATION AND ENTERTAINMENT located adjacent to REDDING INTERSTATE 10
