The name "Camarillo" comes from Spanish meaning "humble place." The area was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. In 1849, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on what is now Camarillo Boulevard in what is now downtown Ventura. In 1852, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna set off an attack against American forces at Buena Park which resulted in over 120 dead and more than 500 wounded. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Thomas Edison located his electric lights at a site east of present-day Camarillo on San Pedro Street called Edison Station #1 (later renamed Westinghouse Electric Company). However because there were no available water supplies to make electricity from underground he built his own well and installed two generating plants near where he later built his house today on Topanga Avenue. In 1886 Pacific Gas & Electric began service to Ventura County with its first line across town from Northridge through Paradise Valley to Moorpark Junction; this provided power for many local businesses until deregulation completed in 1990 caused most electrical services within Ventura County to be moved to PG&E's new structure in Simi Valley with few exceptions (the exception being cable TV services which are still contracted out through PG&E). The arrival of Interstate 5 in 1962 led to suburban sprawl that continues into this day as residents continue moving westward into former agricultural land while new development takes place along residential streets such as Sunrise Road and Slope Drive that lead directly into I-5 freeways like State Route 209/Piney Mesa Boulevard. The first scope mount was designed in 1922 and is called the Weaver Fieldscope. It was made out of metal and plastic and had two panels that could be rotated around the focuser for adjusting magnification. In 1949, Weaver introduced their own version of the fieldscope, which became known as the Weaver K3. This scope came with a built-in tripod that allowed it to be mounted on a rifle or shotgun stock using four screws at each corner. The K3 also had an adjustable eyepiece that allowed for magnification up to 100x. In 1952, Nikon released their own version of the fieldscope called the N4S microscope. This scope came with both an adjustable eyepiece and a magnifying glass that allowed it to magnify up to 10x. By 1960, all major companies had released their own versions of the fieldscope: Nikon, Weaver, Leica, Browning, Bushnell etc. With so many different models available, there were plenty of options for hunters who wanted to find the perfect scope for their needs.

In 1846, two men named George and Samuel Camarillo purchased 1,000 acres of land in what is now the city of Camarillo. The couple started a small ranch that produced cattle and sheep. In 1854, they built a large adobe house on their property which served as their home until 1959. In that year, they sold the house to the City of Camarillo for $1,500. The City has used the house as its municipal headquarters ever since. The first American settlers in what is now Camarillo arrived in 1827. They were led by Captain John Brougham who had been traveling down the California coast from San Francisco when he heard about gold deposits at Sutter’s Fort on November 16th, 1826. He set out with his brother-in-law James Irvine and four other men to explore these new lands and determine whether or not they were worth exploring further. Captain Brougham found no gold but did find many valuable mineral rights including copper veins near where he settled down with his party at Rancho Segundo Blanca (later called Rancho Santa Margarita). After exploring this area for several months, he decided to return eastward instead of continue downriver where there was much potential for finding more gold Nuggets but also greater danger from rapids and ambush by Indians. On January 26th, 1830 Captain Brougham discovered another significant site; an extensive silver mine at Benicia Creek which yielded over $2 million dollars worth of silver ore! This discovery made captain Brougham one of wealthiest men in American history and earned him the title “The King Of Silver Mines”! However, because of rush production caused by this new source of income it quickly ran out and within a few years most alluvialsilver mining had ended up being done by Dutch miners omitting Captain Brougham from any share in this great success story!
The name of the town is most likely derived from the Spanish word "camarillo" meaning a flower. The first known mention of the town was in 1821 when it was part of Alta California and named San José de Camarillo. The first post office in the town was established in 1825.
