The Camarillo, California area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first European to visit the area was Juan Bautista de Anza, who explored the region in 1769. In 1821, a group of Missionaries from San Francisco founded the Catholic missions at Rancho Santa Margarita and Rancho Santa Ana. These missions were later renamed as Mission San José and Mission San Pablo respectively. In 1847, Spanish Governor Manuel Micheltorena granted land east of the Sacramento Valley for a mission colony called Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. This colony failed due to bad leadership and lack of support from within Spain. Mexican President Carlos Antonio Lopez y Costilla reactivated Nuestra Señora de la Concepción in 1849 after discovering that there was no need for a new mission colony in California because Mexico had already established its own Missions system in this area. With new discoveries being made all over California, it seemed like it would be folly to establish another mission colony in what was then known as British America. However, forces within Mexico convinced Lopez y Costilla to allow this new colony to be built on his rancho Guanajuato near present-day Paso Robles (near where Placerville now stands). The missionaries named their new village after St. Francis Xavier who had been martyred during the Inquisition era in 1535. The town of Camarillo grew up around St. Francis Xavier's shrine until about 1850 when it moved away from its original location because of increasing competition from other settlements throughout western California for grazingland and other resources that were becoming scarce due to advances in transportation technology such as railways and automobiles
In 1847, the first permanent settlers in Camarillo were two brothers, Isaac and Samuel Merrill. The Merrill family had come from Connecticut and were among the earliest to set foot on theitario soil. In 1850, they erected a log cabin near present-day downtown Camarillo. They continued to live there for many years, until they sold their land in 1872. The city of Camarillo was formally incorporated on January 15, 1876. At first it was known as "Nina." The name change came about because of confusion caused by the presence of two other cities with similar names in nearby Ventura County: Nina (originally named Navarro) and portsmanteau Nava-Rico (Newport Beach).
