Camarillo, California is a small city in central California. It is the seat of Ventura County and was founded in 1853 by Captain George Sutter as part of his Rancho San Vicente. The city's population was 71,813 at the 2010 census, making it the third-most populous municipality in Ventura County after Santa Paula and Oxnard. The first permanent settler in what would become Camarillo was Manuel Nieto, who arrived in 1847. The town began to develop quickly from its original location on a rise overlooking the mission area that served as its main commercial district. By 1870, Camarillo had 1,500 residents and was stagecoach stop for travelers heading north to Mono Lake or south to Los Angeles. In 1875, James Fenton moved from Bellingham with his family to establish what would become Fentonville. In 1888 he sold his land east of Camarillo to John Atherton for $1 million dollars which made him one of the first people to own land within the limits of present-day Ventura County. Atherton named the tract "Camarillo" after his sister-in-law; her husband had died while hunting deer near Mount Wilson some years earlier and she had kept all his possessions including some equipment belonging to him when she crossed over into Mexico on her way back home from visiting her brother-in-law at Chihuahua City (now Ciudad Juárez). Atherton also donated two hundred acres (80 hectares) of woodland adjacent to Main Street between Fourth Street and Seventh Street for public use as a nature reserve. This area became known as Atherton Park today. The development around Main Street included many businesses such as Hough & Company store (1893), Wernham’s hardware store (1900), Tilden’s dry goods store (1901), Pemberton’s restaurant/bar/tavern (1902), Post Office Department Store No 2 (1906), Copley & Son plumbing contractor shop(1907) and Jaffray Brothers grain elevator(1908). It should be noted that not all these businesses survived throughout ensuing decades; examples include Hough & Company gone out of business in 1903 and Wernham’s closed down in 1906 due to World War I hostilities; Tilden’s went out of business during Prohibition; Pemberton’s closed down circa 1920 due primarily to fire damage; Post Office Department Store No 2 went out of business circa 1940; Copley & Sons closed up during World War II although they reopened later under new ownership – this building remains extant today as CAMARILLO Federal Credit Union Building located at 5th Street and Newhall Avenue just east of Interstate 15 across from Arroyo Seco Park.). While there were numerous other businesses established along Main Street over time – many still standing today - it is generally considered that Camarillo's downtown core developed where Atherton Park does now thanks largely to James Fenton's efforts marketing or developing key areas like Market Square Park along Fifth Avenue northward starting about 1890 when he laid out blocks bounded by First Avenue eastward until curving northeast past Third Avenues westward before terminating at Second Avenue northwestward - then turning southeast cornering onto First Avenue northeastward finally reaching Third Avenues northwestward forming an almost perfect square - see also: Map Of Downtown Ventura County showing Blocks E1 through E5

At first, the town consisted of only 10 residents who lived in rudimentary shacks built on large tidal flats adjoining their agricultural lands. However, within a few years, camarillo had become an important trading post for farmers in nearby Porterville and other areas. By 1861, camarillo hadgrown into a sizable community with its own courthouse, jail, schoolhouse, church (which operated until 1903), brewery (which opened in 1865), chapel (opened in 1875), grocery store (opened in 1887), mercantile business (opened in 1889), restaurant (opened in 1893), and two stores. In 1906(), Camarilli became part of the newly created San Francisco Bay Area which experienced rapid growth due to increased transportation options available thanks to developments such as Interstate 5 and Bay Bridge construction. With more people living near each other and new businesses popping up all over the cityscape,Camarlill saw continued growth until it reached its current size by 1950-1952 when it lost over 50% of its population due to migration or relocation elsewhere within California or abroad. Today CAMARILLO continues to be an important center for commerce and culture within the region with over 350 businesses operating inside its borders alone! The economy has diversified significantly overthe years including several unsuccessful attempts at becoming statewidely registered with both state government entities AND local governments!
The town of Camarillo, California is located in the Unincorporated County of Ventura and was platted on December 17, 1853 by Maj. Gen. Antonio L. Sanchez, during the Mexican-American War. The original name for the town was Nacogdoches (meaning "New Town"). It became a part of Northern California when it was annexed by Los Angeles County on January 6, 1913. In 1924, Camarillo established its own school district and began to build its first high school which opened in 1925. In 1928, the first retail store in Camarillo opened and remains one of the most popular businesses in town today. In 1951, Camarillo established its own water system and began to sell water softening products.
