The town began growth slowly but steadily as farmers started settling here and beginning production of irrigation canals, roads and schools became a reality. By 1862 there were over 20 residents living in town working on farms or ranching properties; by 1870 only 10 remained while CAMARILLO CANTINA & SALON opened for business on September 12th 1870 bringing much excitement to the small town! On October 3rd 1887 when CAMARILLO incorporated as a city it became one of two cities in Ventura County with over 100,000 people (the other being Oxnard). At that time most businesses open up early so people could get home for dinner before going out onto their plantations or ranches; coffee roasting mills were among these first businesses established hereabouts! In 1908 CAMARILLO got it's charter from Governor Hiram Johnson giving it legal status within our great state! In 1842, José Joaquín Mora y Salinas purchased Rancho Rinconada from Juan Bautista de Anza for $4,000USD. The Moras named their rancho Rinconada after Mount Paria, located about 15 miles northeast of their rancho on the central coast of Ventura County. Mora y Salinas began building his home on Rinconada Creek in 1845 and finished it six years later. He then moved operations to what is now downtown Camarillo and opened a mercantile business called La Mesa Palace Merchants Association store. In 1849 he married Mariana Aramburu y Sánchez and changed his name to José Mora y Acosta (later Mora). In 1862 Father Pedro Rivera arrived from Mexico City with seven other Jesuits as part of an effort to found new missions on thecentral coast of California. Father Rivera did not find success during his initial visits to Santa Paula, Carpinteria or Watsonville but he decided to establish himself at Carpinteria because it had more potential as a mission town than any others on the Central Coast. Father Rivera erected three churches – Santuario del Sacramento (1863), Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (1868) and Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (1872) – as well as four schools: El Colegio Nacional de Santa Clara (1866), el Colegio San Francisco Xavier del Valle (1870), el Instituto Tecnológico Autonomous del Valley Marechal De La Cueva (1901) and el Colegio Internacional Nicolás Maduro Dominguez (1911). In 1865 Morales y Acosta sold Rinconada Creek Rancho for $5 millionto raise money for Mexican independence efforts then ongoing throughout Southern California (). After achieving Mexican independence that year Morales y Acosta divided his lands among his followers according to voting rights held by each individual parishioner rather than through inheritance or purchase like previous Mexican governors had done (). This change marked one step towards creating what would become Camarillo when Spanish colonists left for good following Mexico'simarquía victory over Mexico City's legitimate government in 1861 (). After experiencing much poverty due mainly to natural disasters such as floods and droughts (), Morales y Acosta founded two colleges: Universidad Simón Bolívar en 1948 (#1stever private university established in United States)and Pontifical Catholic University Menlo Park (#2ndever private university established in United States).Morales died suddenly after midnight on October 16th 1951 while attending a religious service at Our Lady’s Convent Chapel inside Los Angeles’ Cathedral Basilica

In 1873, Captain John Sutter arrived in what is now Camarillo with his rancho grants and began to build a new settlement. The costano people helped him erect the first house on the site. In 1887, Camarillo became an incorporated town under the name of North Hollywood. On December 12th, 1886, it changed its name to Santa Anita after racehorse Champion sired by American horse trainer Ascot Prendergast.
