They named their new settlement after the battle of Palo Alto, which took place in 1849 between American and Mexican forces. The Atwoods were able to purchase 1,500 acres of land from Mule Creek Rancho de las Pulgas (now part of Santa Clarita) for $850 per acre. Today, Camarillo boasts an array of businesses including several restaurants and a variety of shops including a post office and bank. The community also operates two libraries- one dating back to 1921 and another opened in 2006 that features an exhibit on local history. The first Europeans to set foot on the banks of the San Gabriel River were members of the Spanish expedition led by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. The area was explored and claimed by Spain in 1769 when Gaspar de Portolà discovered a group of islands off the coast. Mission San Gabriel was founded in 1795, and became an important center for religious instruction and trade with nearby Mexico. In 1821, California became part ofMexico as part of the Mexican-American War, and Calafia became part of Ulysses S. Grant's army during its march through California. The Battle of Palo Alto took place near present-day Camarillo on November 7, 1847, during what is known as the Alta California Expedition.
