Cimarillo is a town located in Ventura County, California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 382. The name of the town comes from Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo's sighting of land on November 8, 1542 near present-day Camarillo. The first permanent settlement in what is now Cimarillo was made by Franciscans in 1768. In 1821 the town was platted and named for Lieutenant Colonel José Cámpora y Gómez who served as engineer on Governor Manuel Micheltorena's survey expedition to Chico Valley in 1820-22. Captain John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at Point Vicente about three miles east of modern Cimarillo in 1847 during the Mexican–American War. A post office called Camarillo was established at point Vicente in 1849, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1906. A school and store were built here soon after, which helped make up for lack of water supplies caused by San Fernando Faulting. The first train pulled into Camarillo Station on May 4, 1886 service began between Los Angeles and San Francisco via Carcasona Way (now Harbor Boulevard). Today Amtrak runs passenger trains through this station to/from Southern California daily along various tracks including State Route 92 corridor

In 1911, the Camarillo Municipal Airport was opened and became one of the busiest airports in Southern California. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II with a population increase from fewer than 100 people in 1940 to over 3,000 in 1945. After the war, Camarillo's economy shifted focus away from agriculture and towards industry and services. The city saw significant development during the early 21st century with efforts to establish a local education system, increase access to transportation options, and create new businesses including office parks and a hospital. However, recent years have seen a decline in population and employment within the city limits
