The history of firearms clothing in Camarillo, California starts with the early arrival of Europeans to the area. Firearms were not unknown to the Native Americans, but they were not commonly used until after Spanish explorers and traders arrived in the area in the late 18th century. From this location he began built up what would become known as “Nieto Place” which included many small businesses connected to farming, lumbering and shooting sports. In 1865, rifle manufacturer George Dixon opened his factory on Main Street near San Gabriel Valley Boulevard in what is now downtown Camarillo. Dixon manufactured both military rifles (the Model 1860) as well as civilian firearms such as shotguns and revolvers. His factory remain one of Ventura County’s most significant historical landmarks today. In 1898,Camarillo residents voted to become part of Ventura County; at this time it was still unincorporated territory managed by Mexico City.) At this time there were only six handguns available for purchase within Ventura County. The vote resulted in the establishment of a county sheriff who could issue permits for guns purchases within his jurisdiction subject to strict regulation by county officials including a ban on selling weapons without a license or registration

The Camarillo Pistol Club was founded in 1892. The first pistol club in the town, it met at the home of Mrs. Fenton and consisted of six to eight men. At its inception, pistols were used for target shooting and hunting small game. In 1916, the Camarillo Pistol Club began NRA member dues and had a library on the premises which held pistol Reloading Classes as well as classes on how to use revolvers and shotguns. In 1921, an armory was built adjacent to the town hall and began storing firearms for members both local and out-of-town shoots. In 1942, membership increased to sixteen rifles with two shotguns each from Camarillo residents John Giannini (owner) & his son John Jr., Harry D’Angelo (member), Angelo Signorile (member), George Vecchi (member), & Frank Pignataro (member). The rifle range was also opened in 1944 by Mr. Giannini with one hundred fifty rounds per day being available for shooters at no cost to members other than storage fees! In 1968, when Camp Pendleton became a Marine Corps Basecamp (& Camarillo expanded into annexed inland territory), gun owners & shooters of all ages within Camp Pendleton had their own shooting area within “the camp” thru Octagon Shooting Company located on Naval Air Station Miramar! This facility included a thirty-acre open field that could be arranged into fifteen different firing areas ranging in size from seventy feet by twenty-five feet up to three thousand feet by four thousand feet! As Camp Pendleton grew wealthier during the 1970s some restrictions were placed upon firearm ownership including prohibition of handguns inside “Camp Pendleton” proper!! All rifle ranges within Camp Pendleton were closed Nov 1974 thru Mar 1975 due to declining patronage!!! Rifle ranges continued operating however until Jan 1976 when all rifles were banned except those possessed by Marines or their families!!!!!!!!!

The Camarillo, California History Museum is located in downtown Camarillo. It was founded in 1984 and is the only museum in the county. The first Europeans to explore and map Camarillo were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Miguel López de Legazpi on October 15, 1502. The area that is now Camarillo was part of the Mission Santa Margarita in San Diego County. The mission was founded in 1769 by Father Fernando Báez. In 1833, the Mexican government granted Rancho Rinconada to José Antonio Cisneros. In 1851, the United States acquired Rancho Rinconada from José Antonio Cisneros. On January 8, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation ordering all land grants in California be surveyed and platted. The first grant to be patented was Rancho Rinconada to José Antonio Cisneros. On November 24, 1862, the Mexican Congress passed an act creating the town of Fillmore within San Diego County as a result of recommendations made by Governor Alvarado following the attack on Fort Sumter by Confederate forces on April 12, 1861. The townsite was named for Fillmore (a name used for several missions located near Fillmore), which then became known as San Diego because it had been given to California by Mexico as part of its cession during the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848.
