Camarillo, California is a small town located in Ventura County, California. The population of Camarillo was 7,856 at the 2010 census. Of particular note are the Champlain Mission and Pico del Rey missions which were founded in 1777 and 1781 respectively. These two missions still maintain their importance as religious landmarks in Camarillo. The history of Camarillo goes back to 1824 when it was named after Captain John Huber's Rancho San Carlos y la Villa de las Pulgas (Rancho San Carlos and Villa de las Pulgas). In 1852, it became part of the National City Improvement District. In 1907, it became an incorporated city with a population of 14,000 people. In 1961, it accepted an invitation to become part of the State of California. The Champlain Mission is now open to the public for tours every day from 9am to 5pm from May 1 through October 15th inclusive; however the mission museum closed on October 15th due to low attendance levels. Admission is free for all visitors during these tour times only! The Pico del Rey mission is currently not open to the public but you can still explore its contents by visiting its sister church - Our Lady Of GuadalupeMission inside City Hall. On December 11th 1861 Mexican forces burned down part of what is now downtown Camarillo while skirmishing with American troops who had been occupying that area since 1862 following Mexico's withdrawal from America conquests in that year under President Abraham Lincoln's Proclamation 1065 which re-established Utopia as our new territorial capital city limits within American territory northeast of Bakersfield
The Camarillo Valley was originally inhabited by the Mono people. The first European to see the valley was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who explored it in 1542. In 1821, Mexico gained United States control of California and the Camarillo Valley became part of California. The name 'Camarillo' is thought to derive from a Yaqui word meaning "place where there are grapes."
