From 1907-1970, much of what we know about today’s California City comes from oral tradition passed down through local ranchers who would go out intothe area during those years for their muleskinning operations (it wasn't until after World War II that machine production finally commenced here). One suchreport comes from John Wesley Powell who visited this area while exploring Lost Creek Canyon in 1912 while hewas surveying land grants nearby for his new irrigation project; upon discovering that Californiacity lay within his proposed boundaries, he suggested renaming it Califor
