In 1848, California City was founded by a group of gold seekers led by Major George C. Smith. The site that would become California City was on the eastern edge of what is now San Diego County, about 25 miles south of downtown San Diego. It was named for the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez, then part of Alta California. In 1850, the town had a population of around 150 people and sold goods at local markets. By 1861, when it became an incorporated town, California City had a population of 468 people and it began to grow rapidly due to its location near major gold-mining areas in southern Mexico and central United States. In 1872, California City became one of the first towns in the newly formed state of Arizona when that state was established as a result of the Mexican–American War. California City experienced significant growth during its time as an incorporated town. By 1870, it had reached a population size of 1,500 people and began to build up infrastructure such as schools and churches. It also started to form businesses such as mercantile stores and inns. The town also became known for its annual fair which attracted large crowds from throughout southern Mexico and central United States. In 1902, after years of decline in overall population growth rates across all cities in Arizona due to increasing immigration levels and other social changes within the community (e.g., increased divorce rates),California City saw an increase in its overall taxable value with an annexation by Tucson making it one municipality within Tucson’s limits rather than being divided between two separate municipalities – like before! During World War I, CalifornicationCity played host to over 20 military encampments used by American forces stationed along Southern Arizona borderlands during hostilities with Aguascalientes Province (now Guerrero). After hostilities ended in 1918 without any further U.S.-Mexican conflict ensuing (a common theme among wars fought on American soil), most Americans left Coyotes battlefield but not until very late into 1920’s when there were more reports coming back about local skirmishes taking place among soldiers; these skirmishes managed between troops themselves leading some members/officers believe they may have been targetted because they were young men who looked too humanlike for horseback riding & shooting drills given their civilian clothing
