It was founded by Spanish settlers in 1769 as part of Rancho de la Paloma. California City became an incorporated city on May 14, 1858. The first post office in California City was established on December 12, 1847, and served until July 1, 1850. In 1860, the first school opened in CaliforniaCity and it operated until 1871. The first store in town was established by Wm Henson on February 5, 1860. There were three churches in early days: the Methodist Episcopal Church (1860), Roman Catholic Parish (1861), and Presbyterian Church (1863). In 1865, Commodore John Dye organized a military detachment to suppress Mexican land squatters called "Los Angeles". The detachment camped at what is now known as Rabbit Ear Hill from November 21-24th 1865. On November 25th 1865 Captain George Buttram of USS Constitution captained a small party of men under command of Lieutenant Moses Sutter that explored the area around present day California City for prospects for trading goods with Mexico or engaging any local Native Americans who may have been living there without permission from their respective governments. They found no evidence whatsoever that anyone had engaged or resided within these boundaries since they departed two days earlier than planned and no Indian artifacts were discovered during their exploration which suggests they did not discover any Mexican activity taking place within this vicinity at that time
