In the early 1800s, California City was a small settlement in Sonoma County, California. It was founded by pioneers in 1848, and became a key town in the wine country. In 1899, it was renamed to Hardin after General James H. Hardin, who served as Lieutenant Governor of California from 1875-1879. The town continued to be named Hardin until 1974 when it changed its name back to California City following the passage of Proposition 13. California City first became known for its wine industry. But other businesses also grew up here during this time: lumberyards, tin mines, bakeries and more. The city's economy thrived thanks to its location on Route 1 and easy access to markets across the Bay Area. A year later, following Mexican independence from Spain, Mexico ceded this area to America through Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the Mexican–American War. Californias first post office was established in 1858, and it functioned until 1861 when it became known as Gadsden Landing due to its location near Gadsden Rancho de las Pulgas within present day Orange County. The town received its name from grantee John Hagedorn Sr., an American silvermining baron who donated $5,000 towards its construction; however no development took place until after Hagedorns death in 1865 when his son John Hagedorn Jr., also an American silvermining baron, erected a building associated with todays Californias first bank—the First National Bank Building at Fourth and Main Streets—in honor of his fathers donation plus interest accrued since its creation on March 3rd 1865 by Trustee J P Hogan & Company Ltd.—a predecessor organization to current Wells Fargo Financial Corporation (). By 1870 there were over 100 dwellings and businesses in what is now California City according to one source (). In 1880 there were 1,500 residents including 300 children living aboard ships anchored off shore (). According to another source (), by 1890 there were 5300 people living throughout most or all incorporated areas within 10 miles (16 km) radius of where modern day Calico Junction sits ()—including 4200 Black Americans () making up almost two thirds (.63%)of all settlers (). A 1893 article detailed conditions faced by pioneer farmers such as: high winds that whipped crops into submission (); poor soil quality (); water shortages (); wild animals () and mentioned that some communities had even resorted to cannibalism among their own citizens out of necessity (). Some sources claim that early Californias main breadcrop was cottonseed but other reports indicate maize or corn being their primary crop (). One report claims vegetables also grew extensively but varieties grown have not been preserved so definitive confirmation necessary for this claim . However despite these challenges many pioneers believed they would eventually become self sufficient () thanks largely to white flight throughout much Southern California during this time period culminating with World War I ())
