California City is a small city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 693 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of San Bernardino Valley and bordered by East Mojave National Preserve to the south and northwest, Ontario Park to the north, and Hesperia to the east. The first European settlers in what would become California City were Spanish traders who established a presence along the Gaviota River in 1769. The area that would become California City was part of Rancho Tejon de la Serna (Tejon Ranch) until 1836 when it was sold to John Waddell for $2 million. In 1876, Waddell donated land for a new post office which opened in 1879 as California City. The town site that now includes California City was platted in 1886 by Elisha Gray Otis with assistance from J.P. Morgan and other investors including brothers Amos Hockaday and George Hearst. The name change came about because of an error made when naming towns after states: Otis named his town Fort Tejon while Haight-Ashbury, Californy had been given its name just two years earlier! It wasn't until 1907 that residents voted to change their name back to Californy after statehood occurred in 1850s

It is the most populous city in San Bernardino County and the sixth-most populous city in California. The first permanent settlement of what would become California City was made on December 29, 1847 by two brothers, John Sutter and Sam Brannan from Oregon. The town was named after Captain Gabriel García Márquez's personal Rancho Cañon de Santa Ana (now part of Rancho Mirage), located northeast of today's town square. The first post office was established in December 1847. By 1850, there were sixty residents living in the fledgling community which now included parts of present-day Riverside and Ontario Counties as well as portions of San Bernardino and Riverside counties. In 1857, with gold being discovered nearby at Sutterville, California City became an important stop on cross-country wagon trains transporting Aucoinite gold nuggets to Southern Californians for their use in mining operations. In 1860–1861 tensions between various Native American groups led to violence throughout much of southern Kern County; this led to the establishment by Governor Pio Pico of a military district composed exclusively of Mexican Americans called "Los Angeles" or "Pima Strip". This area lay east of present day Interstate 10 within Los Angeles County but outside any Mexican American enclaves – including that controlled by Chicanos/as such as José María Escobar and Manuel Orozco—and so it remained largely lawless until 1912 when Sheriff Hiram Burgos organized a force to clean up Anglo gangs operating around downtown Los Angeles during Taft's New Frontier years; Burgos' efforts eventually resulted in increased Anglo settlement near downtown LA (the original Central District). Californial City experienced some significant growth following World War II: its population topped 50,000 for the first time on July 1st 1945 when Japanese nationals were relocated from other U.S.-occupied areas into internment camps pursuant to Executive Order 9066; over 60% of all civilian workers engaged in defense production within AIRA during hostilities were natives born inside or adjacent to CaliCity limits; local businesses rapidly grew into one majorstay for servicemen stationed along I-10 west of downtownLA; post-war prosperity allowed many residents—particularly younger ones—to purchase homes elsewhere within metropolitan Los Angeles proper while still maintain close ties with their childhood home through social clubs and parades attended annually inside/outside historic Downtown CA CIty Hall – promptly followed by numerous special events commemorating life during wartime decades both past & present held concurrently each year right here at DOWNTOWN CA CITY FESTIVAL Grounds!… [O]ur very own “Hollywood” had come alive once again!
