California City is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 21,824 at the 2010 census. The first permanent white settlement in what is now California City was made by José Gabriel García Márquez in 1827 on land grant from Governor Manuel Nieto. The town of California, founded by Garcia and his father-in-law, Juan Bautista Alvarado, became the county seat of San Bernardino County in 1851. With the opening of the Mexican–American War (1846–48), Californian volunteers enlisted in General John C. Fremont's cavalry to Battle of Bear Mountain near present-day Riverside; American forces emerged victorious and Californians were forced to flee. After several years of development at the hands of boosters such as George Hearst and others, construction began on a railroad through central San Bernardino County in 1876 which successfully linked Los Angeles with east coast markets. However, during World War II when resources were scarce local residents pulled together to form a stockpiling network that stored food for troops stationed abroad. When war ended they exported much more food than they had produced so most people returned home to rebuild their lives post-war. In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed legislation annexing Riverside and surrounding unincorporated areas into Riverside County as part of the efforts to integrate Los Angeles into a single community across racial lines – an event often referred to as "Riverside shock." The city experienced rapid growth following incorporation; by 1980 it had reached its current size within just 10 years after being designated one of four cities within Southern California chosen forProposition 209 –Measure D designation as a municipal unit with voting power equal to that of any other municipality within Orange County (the other three being Anaheim Hills, Glendale and Carson). However Growth Control Board opponents used this opportunity to tryand reduce or even eliminate resident voice on certain issues while promoting industrial development adjacentto existing residential neighborhoods rather then invest money into developing new neighborhoods outsideCity limits thereby preserving neighborhood values & identity
