California City is located in Contra Costa County, California, on the banks of the San Francisco Bay. The population was 17,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city's name comes from Spanish "californio" meaning "of Californios." The first settlers in California City were Mexican American refugees who had fled their homes during and after the Mexican–American War (1846-48). They arrived in 1847 and started a small town on an island in what is now Fremont Creek. In 1850, they founded Stockton on Mud Creekbank opposite modern day Hayward. In 1853, gold was discovered near what is now Pleasanton and early settlers began to arrive to claim it. On May 25 of that year, John Cranch became one of the first white men to enter California City when he walked overland from Nevada throughSonoma County into Contra Costa County. He found payable gold deposits at Sutter’s Mill (now Albany) and named his new town after General Antonio López de Santa Anna who had led Mexico’s forces against Ulysses S. Grant’s Union army at Palo Alto on April 14th, 1848. Santa Anna had been impeached by Congress and driven into exile in February 1849; he returned to Mexico two months later with news that US forces had captured Los Angeles without battle or bloodbath as well as Monterey Peninsula which included today’s Oakland. As a result of this event American confidence greatly improved within Mexico about its ability to retake Central America if needed should hostilities break out there again with Americans present (the so called “Alamosa Affair”). This increased American trade with Mexicans which helped contribute significantly to increasing numbers of Anglo immigrants coming westward during this time period such as James Wills who arrived here in 1851 followed immediately by his brother George Wills in March 1852/3 for unknown reasons other than finding rich gold prospects nearby along El Dorado Hills outside Solano County but still within Mexican territory under American military occupation known then as Alta California (Utopia), renamed Orange County soon thereafter... these newcomers would continue streaming into California City until World War II when most left due largely to growing competition for jobs among war production plants across Northern CA coastline states... 2 Other early settlements established around this time include Hercules on Mule Creek east of present day Richmond and Dayton on Warm Springs creek just east of Diablo Valley north center city Limits - these towns did not remain long initially due lack of interest or resources relative to larger more populated areas nearby however they are still represented today via numerous businesses primarily based out Eastside & Northgate area adjacent To Interstate 5 BART Station etc., Sacramento being another notable post WWII settlement located very close by also situated along I-5 corridor just south Of Modesto Airport

California City was founded in 1852 by Captain John Sutter and his men on the San Joaquin River. The site of the modern-day city is located about two miles east of its present location at the junction of State Route 36 and U.S. Route 101. California City was named for the Mexican state of Chihuahua, which was then part of Mexico City. The town began as a trading post on the confluence of the rivers, and soon became an important center for gold mining in California. In 1853, Captain Sutter established a base here to help lead his men into what would become known as The Great Gold Rush. By 1861, California City had reached its peak population with over 2,500 residents. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), many people from California City sided with the Union side and fled to Oregon or other parts of America. After the war ended, much businessactivity stopped in California City due to lack of available labor and infrastructure. However, some businesses re-started up later in the 20th century once new transportation options became available such as air travel and highwaysization made it easier to reach more peopleizable areas across California County. Today, most families live in small towns scattered throughout Northern California County or within easy driving distance of major metropolitan areas like Sacramento or Los Angeles proper; however, there are still remnants left from pioneer days when trade goods were brought downriver by boatload from points such as Stockton and Bakersfield
The California City area was first settled by the Spanish in 1769, and was part of Alta California. The area became a part of Mexico after the Mexican-American War in 1848. The United States acquired California City in 1853, and it became an incorporated city on January 15, 1860. On November 1, 1912, California City merged with San Bernardino County to form Riverside County.
