In 1875-76 actor/director Edwin Booth made his stage debut here while performing at the Moraga Theatre before traveling to New YorkCity for two weeks to attend an engagement at Madison Square Garden where he became friends with then-President Ulysses S Grant. He built several large businesses including the Pacific Telephone Company (later AT&T), which became one of America's largest phone companies; formed two banks; built two churches; founded two schools;and organized many civic groups including the YMCA and American Legion. Irvine also took an active role in creating California's political system and serving as its first governor (1865-68). During this time he helped establish prominent local politicians such as Hiram Johnson (then United States Senator from Texas), John Dutton (who later served as Governor of California during World War II), Harry Bridges ( Twice Mayor of Oakland), Ralph J. Gleason (former Mayor of Berkeley) and Edmund Beasley Jr.(State Superintendent for Education). In 1905 Irvine donated land around his former rancho Niguel to create what is now UC Berkeley campus; he also endowed UCLA with its current nameakes – University Campus College Angeles County Library System and Claremont Colleges campuses outside Los Angeles County – making him one of America's most generous philanthropists. In 1932 Orange County was formed from parts of San Bernardino County east of Interstate 5 along with Riverside County to the south while westward continuation along I-5 were given to Ventura County on November 1st that same year by Governor Earl Warren under National Order No.#1935 Thurston Gilbert Act - superseding State Order No.#1934 Harvey Woodbury Act which provided for county formation following statehood lawsuit brought by county residents against Riverside/San Bernardino duopoly
