In 1853, California City was founded on the site of today’s California City. The town was named for Captain José Antonio Vallejo, who explored the area in 1848. Vallejo thought the area would be a lucrative place to set up a store because of its rich soil and available water supplies. In 1850, Captain John A. Sloat donated land for the town and it became one of the first towns in San Diego County. The first businesses in California City were agricultural ventures such as a grocery store, bakery, meat market and sawmill. By 1870, there were six stores in California City with a population of around 100 residents. In 1872, two United States soldiers died while fighting against Mexican forces near California City and local citizens contributed money to build a military cemetery nearby. This event helped start what is now known as Californias history as an important center for military activity in the region. In 1886, CaliforniaCity voted to become an incorporated city with its own government separate from San Diego County. The city's mayor at that time was Cesar Chavez who later became famous for leading militant civil rights protests against discrimination within San Diego County government

The California City area was settled in 1769 by Spanish settlers. The first post office in the area was established in 1853.
