In 1988, State Senator Don Huffman moved his family to Calexico from their home near Sacramento because he felt that county government should be based more closely within the geographical area rather than being scattered throughout many different counties across California. From then on until Huffman's death in 2001, County Commissioner Darrell Issa served as Acting County Attorney for Shasta County while also holding other offices including Mayor of Crescent City (city adjacent to Aspen).
