Three other officers were also injured when their rifles were fired at close range as they pursued the suspects. The melee that ensued left four officers dead and sixteen others injured. This event has come to be known as the Calexico Massacre because it resulted in such high levels of violence within local law enforcement forces during this time period

Calexico is located on the banks of the San Gabriel River and along Interstate 15. It was founded by Mexicans in 1879 as part of Rancho Cucamonga. The name "Calexico" means "peaceful place." The first post office in Calexico was established in 1881. The first store in town was built by John Doherty and A.F. Larkin on Main Street in 1882. In 1886, James Fenton opened a general store on Third Street across from the old train depot which served as the town's center until it burned down in 1951. In 1911, Wm Halsey started shipping fruits and vegetables to Southern California from his farm at Shelter Island near Los Angeles for distribution through local stores and restaurants. He named his fruitstrailer "Halsey's Hope". Halsey later became president of Superior Fruit Transport Co., Ltd., based in Ennis, Texas.. In 1922 when I-15 was completed through this area there were few places for people to live so many businesses started up around schools like fuel stations (Lemonade), grocery stores (Grocery Outlet), bars (Alcoholic Beverages) and more recently an RV park (Cableway Motors). One such business is Adobe Photography which still operates today out of their old location at 114th & Broadway Rd just east off I-15 North
