Calexico, California is a city located in San Diego County, California. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Calexico were Mission San Diego de Alcalá on October 20, 1769. The area that is now Calexico was part of Rancho Santa Fe del Sur and it became part of Mexico when the Mexican-American War ended in 1848. On December 8, 1849, the United States acquired Rancho Cucamonga from Mexico for $10 million. When the US Treasury Department declared bankruptcy in 1893, it sold most of its lands to various investors including James Wickersham and his brother George Wickersham Sr., who founded Sutter's Mill Company which built a flour mill on the east side of town. In 1916, Sutter's Mill and other mills were destroyed by fire which destroyed much of downtown Calexico. The city started as a small community near present-day Elmendorf Road and I-8 about 1870 called "Alta Vista." A post office was established there in 1872, and growth continued until after World War II when new housing began replacing older fabricant homes around Elmendorf Road and other parts of town. By 1970 there were more than 1,000 residents living in some form or another within walking distance of almost all services available inside their respective municipalities boundaries--an unheard-of situation at that time even within large metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles or Chicago. From here ranch hand José María Chávez developed cattle farming operations which produced some of the most valuable beef in Mexico during the late 19th century. In 1862 Juan José Ortiz discovered oil while exploring for petroleum near present-day Mexicali; however, no production took place until 1886 when David Hidalgo began producing natural gas from shale underlain by limestone at nearby Gila River Valley with help from American Petroleum Company (APCO).
