It is located on the Sonoma Coast on the south side of San Francisco Bay. The first Europeans to visit what is now Calexico were Spanish traders in 1769-1770 who named it Santa Cruz de la Raza due to its location near Monterey Peninsula. The area that would become Calexico wasuninhabited by Native Americans until 1848 when Mexican soldiers discovered fur trappers and cattle drives from Northern Mexico living thereabouts. A man by the name of James Marshall built a small adobe town here about 1849 though no one has been able to confirm this story. In 1851, prospectors arrived in quest of gold and found silver but no land was available for settlement so they moved on. In 1850, Humboldt County was formed from part of Alameda County and Calexico became its capital under then-Governor Manuel Micheltorena as part of his efforts to consolidate all Californias government under one roof following Mexican independence from Spain. On March 4th, 1861 – days before US Civil War began – General John Blythe burned down Marshall’s townsite in what is now known as Battle Ground Hill during an attempt to seize control of a nearby rancho (land grant) belonging to Commodore William Kidd which had been claimed by both him and fellow Unionist Captain Samuel Eliot Morison. Blythe believed that if he could take control of Kidd’s property he could build an arsenal at Stockton on the Central Valley coast in order to supply Confederate forces fighting inside California while also shielding Southern sympathizers within his own state from potential Yankee aggression should hostilities break out elsewhere in America. Although not successful in achieving his goal, Blythe did lay the foundation for later military operations around Yuma Pass including plans for troop movements up San Joaquin Valley which led directly into World War II; today's Eastgate Mall just outside Yuma is traceable back to those early days! As with most frontier settlements, business activities centered around provisioning troops and their horses with foodstuffs and ammunition necessary for battles against Comanche Indians roaming central Arizona Territory during the late 1800s; mining operations yielded some significant profits but also created major environmental issues such as water shortages which lead eventually to social unrest among Anglo-American miners over payouts given to labor leaders after strikes successfully disrupt production However cotton farming entered into full swing soon thereafter becoming another importantstay at this time with local residents helping provide essential labor for large industrial plantations Such as Imperial Oil Company's refinery complex located adjacent today along I-5 near downtown CA]MEXICO CITY]!]
