One man who played a significant role in bringing about this change was José Joaquín Murillo y Pavón, Governor of Veracruz during the Mexican-American War (1846-1847). He purchased some 8,000 acres (3 km²) around what is now Calexico for $1 per acre ($25 000/km²). This purchase made possible the development of what would become one of Mexico's most successful agricultural communities – ranchos de laCalagua – which stretched from central California down into present-day Baja California. Ranchos de laCalagua were unique because they were not subject to individual leasehold or ownership but rather operated as cooperative farms managed by elected officials called juntas or councils. In addition to their production crops such as cattle, pigs and hogs, ranches also grew cotton, appleseed rape oil and almonds; manufactured goods included saddles, wheels and tools; served as homes for local farmers' families; and hosted cultural events such as bullfights and rodeo exhibitions*. From its inception until 1945*, ranches de laCalagua accounted for more than half (58%)*of Imperial County's total farm output*. *Note: This figure does not include ranches located outside OFA boundaries
