Some of the most famous shootings in Calexico, California took place at the nearby rancho de las Navajas. The rancho de las Navajas was a land grant given to José Joaquín de Arce by the Mexican government in 1821. It later passed through several hands before it came into ownership by Don Hector Carrillo in 1875. In 1903, Don Hector Carrillo sold the rancho de las Navajas to millionaire George Bird Griggs. Griggs renamed it "The Rancho Calexico". In 1934, two gunmen killed five people and wounded nine others at a party at The Rancho Calexico nightclub. The event is also known as the "Canton shooting." In 1951, three gunmen shot and killed four people and wounding one person at an Old West show on display at The Rancho Calexico fairgrounds. This event is also known as the "Lenore massacre." In 1992, Unabomber Ted Kaczynski detonated a car bomb in downtown Los Angeles that killed five people and injured twenty-six others. This event is also known as the "LAX bombing."
Calexico is a small town in California located about an hour's drive north of San Diego. The population was 2,390 at the 2010 census. It is part of San Diego County. The first people to live in what is now Calexico were the Ohlone Indians. They built their villages on high hills near what is now downtown Calexico. In 1827, Mexican land grantee Juan Bautista Alvarado erected a stockade around Mission San Carlos Borromeo and began to claim Rancho Santa Fe for Mexico as part of his holdings in California. In 1853, seventy-six year old Chihuahua War Veteran Captain José de la Luz y Valdez granted Rancho Rinconada (now part of Calexico) to John Sutter and his brother, Manuel Sutter. The first white man to set foot on Rinconada was José Altamirano who discovered gold nuggets there in 1858. In 1863 the United States acquired title to Rancho Rinconada from José de la Luz y Valdez and set out to explore it for mineral rights. A group of American entrepreneurs led by George Hearst leased some land from De la Luz y Valdez in 1865 and started building what would become Hearst Observatory on Cerro Gordo Hill overlooking Rinconada Creek which became known as Calexico or "the Hill". A post office called Calexico was established at this location on May 9, 1865, by mail from Sacramento with the name "Hearstville", but it never received mail because no one lived there except George Hearst himself! The last letter sent from Sacramento was dated December 4th, 1923 with the new name "Calexico" after he sold the hilltop property back to De La Luz y Valdez for $1 million! By 1900, when Prohibition began drinking had become an all-too-common pastime throughout much of America many men left jobs mining gold and other minerals and started farmers who grew grapes and olives along side ranches that supported tenant farming operations like those operated by José de la Luz y Valdez before him. Although prices for these crops dropped during prohibition years due largely to overproduction by states such as Nevada where silver content in soil made wine production profitable, grapes did still account for more than 60% of total export earnings for the county during that time period; even today grape exports make up a large share (upwards of 50%)of total county agricultural sales

The city's name comes from two Spanish words: "calle" (street) and "exacto" (perfect). In 1957, Calexico became a part of the United States after being divided between California and Arizona. The citizens of Calexico continued to vote their own mayor and city council until 1978, when they formed a new government that is still in place today. Calexico has been known for its dairy products since it was first settled by Mexicans in the 1800s. Today, many businesses in the city produce milk products such as cheese and yogurt. In addition to these goods, there are several restaurants and cafes that serve local cuisine. Additionally, there are several recreational activities available for residents including golfing, swimming, hiking and playing tennis.
In 1821, Mexican land grants were made to Juan Calexico and his wife Tonaya. The couple named their new settlement after their father-in-law, Diego Rivera. In 1834, the name was changed to Calexico because of the increase in trade with California. The town's growth continued during the Gold Rush years as people arrived looking for wealth and minerals. By 1850, Calexico had a population of around 1,000 people. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Calexico experienced significant growth due to its location on the main route between Los Angeles and San Francisco. This led to an increase in development and infrastructure including a railroad station and sanitary district that helped make life easier for residents.
