In 1857, John Sutter arrived in California with his herds of cattle and began ranching in what is now known as Sutter's Valley. He soon realized that there were great potential resources available in this area including coal and oil shale deposits which he drilled at Calexico Point on the Peninsula. In 1861, he sold his interest in racetracks to Wm Hallett Railway Company for $2 million dollars ($ ). Hallett built a railroad from southern San Diego through Pasadena to Culiacan City on Oct 4, 1862 making Calexico one of the first communities served byrailroads in Southern California. On Dec 5th 1865 Wm Hallett died suddenly at his home after dinner with some friends at Lighthouse Reef Hotel in San Diego when a wagon loaded with nails ran into him leaving a gaping hole that still exists today - one of many unsolved mysteries about this event. At Hallett’s death this Railroad became part of Southern Pacific Railroad..
