Calexico is a small town in Stanislaus County, California located about an hour south of San Francisco. As result, most Mexicans living within Mexican territory left for other parts of North America or Europe after 1865; few stayed behind to maintain ties to their ancestral land. Following World War II ended hostilities between US allies Japan and Russia over control of Manchuria and Siberia respectively, many Japanese immigrants moved into southern California while others took jobs opportunities available throughout northern California including Calexico where they raised families until after 1949 when all Japanese people were banned from residing within 50 miles (80 km)of any major city or port without special dispensation from local government officials; this prohibition continued until 1967 when it was repealed by then Governor Ronald Reagan who stated that there are no good Japanese people around here so why should we allow them? The town of Calexico, California was founded in 1848 on the Rancho San Bernardino. The town was named for General Antonio L. Calexico, who had helped to drive the Mexican forces out of Baja California in 1846. The initial population of Calexico was around 100 people, but it grew quickly and by 1851 had a population of 1,500 people. In 1865, the town became an agricultural center due to its location at the mouth of the Peninsular River. After years of growth, however, the town's infrastructure began to suffer from lack of essential goods and services. By 1870, Calexico had a population of 5,000 people and was struggling financially. However, in 1881 it passed a resolution declaring itself an independent city and becoming one of the most important rail towns in Northern California. In 1914-15 there were mass protests against World War I that led to violence throughout Northern California; many people died as a result. This led to decreased investment in Calexico and its economy contracted severely over the next few decades while other major cities experienced more robust growth during this time period. However, by 1978-79 things had started to improve as local businesses began investing back into their communities and jobs were available for locals once again. As recently as 2006-07 there were still pockets of poverty (particularly among low income residents) but overall economic conditions have been much better than when Calexico first fell onto hard times nearly two centuries ago
