The rancho was part of Rancho Santa Fe de las Vegas which was granted to Jesús García de la Garza in 1836. In 1886, parts of Rancho San Marcos were annexed to Rancho Cucamonga making it an incorporated town with a population over 1,000 people. In 1906–07 Mexican soldiers under Colonel Tomás Estrada arrested American rancher Antonio López at Los Alamitos for possession of arms and ammunition he had been storing for his own protection while his ranch operated in Mexico City; this event became known as "The Angelus Incident." Caleb Carruth developed a citrus industry near Sunnyside after coming across fruit trees growing wild east of Baja California on his way to sell sugarcane from his farm near Carmelita (now Del Rey) in 1849; he named his new company Carruth & Co., Incorporated January 3rd 1850 – Present day Carruth Orchards Ltd.). The town of Calexico, California was founded in 1853 by John Sutter and his partners. The original settlement was located on the bank of the Sacramento River, about a mile south of present-day I-5. In 1854, the town was moved to its current location on the east side of the river. The name "Calexico" is derived from an Apache word meaning "the place where deer gather." The first post office in Calexico opened in 1859. However, some new businesses have since sprung up such as Rancho Santa Fe RV Resort & Campground which offers visitors all sorts of activities including fishing (seasonal), hiking/biking/swimming/hiking trails through beautiful rolling hillsides near downtown Calexico; or simply spending time outdoors enjoying chaparral Preserve open space right next door with miles of hiking trails running through it!
The Calexico area was first settled by the Ohlone people in about 1250. The Mission San Francisco de Asís, founded in 1776, became the nucleus of the American colonies of California. In 1846, gold was discovered in what is now central California and mining began on a large scale. In 1848, the Mexican government purchased land east of the Sacramento River from John Sutter for $5 million. This transaction made California part of Mexico and barred settlers from its eastern side. The following year, thousands of Anglo-Americans arrived in what is now Calexico to prospect for gold and silver. They built wooden homes and businesses along both sides of the Sacramento River but soon realized that this location was unsuitable for agriculture because it lacked fertile soil. After two years of exploration they returned to their original plan to build a town on the river’s banks but were met with resistance from local Mexicans who felt that they had taken away their land unfairly. A group of businessmen purchased some adobe buildings on Broadway Street near present-day Gold King Mine (then called Independence) and started construction in September 1850. They named their town Calexico after General Antonio López de Cámpora y Pacheco, governor general of New Spain during the period that included California’s initial settlement as part of Alta California (the old Spanish Empire). Calexico quickly became an important center for trade with other parts of Baja California; it also grew into one of Southern California’s most prominent agricultural communities due to its rich soils and abundant water resources. By 1861, however, when Mexico achieved its independence from Spain, Calexico reverted back to Mexican control and remained a small farming community until World War II when it regained its independence as part of Imperial Valley County
