The city of Calexico was founded in 1882 by Hiram S. Beall and his wife, Emma. The town was named for General Pershing, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The Bealls were the first people to live in what is now Calexico. They built a series of log huts on what is now Main Street. Over time, they added more buildings and started a local grocery store. In 1907, they bought land east of the railroad tracks to create an agricultural community known as "Calexico Downs." In 1912, the United States acquired property along the Baja California Peninsula which became known as Rancho Santa Anita County. The government began leasing various parcels of land to farmers, and Calexico became one of these communities. By 1916, there were over 100 residents living in Calexico and 10 businesses operating within its boundaries. In 1918, Beall donated part of his farmlands to the town so that it could be used for school purposes. In 1922, General John J Pershing made an inspection tour of Northern California and took note of Calexico's impressive military installations including Camp Kearny and Camp Roberts located on Beall's farmland just east of town limits. After dinner at his home in Chula Vista he ordered Colonel Harry Laughlin ( commanderof US Marines) to move Camp Roberts inland from its original location about two miles north-west of downtown because it seemed like a threat to Mexican forces besieging Fort Huachuca on adjacent rancho (now Torrance). This event is cited as being instrumental in shaping later UES defense policy towards Mexico City while also helping convince Americans that their country needed another army on its border should things go badly with Mexico City during World War II
