Until then, most villagers had lived around Tijuana where they farmed subsistence agriculture using whatever natural resources they could find. When annexation happened there were only a few farmers left in Calexico who managed to keep their farmsteads operational until recently when much of the farmland has been destroyed by citrus fruit pickers or plowed under by truckloads of fertilizer while crops rot National Geographic named one spot in southwest Baja California “the driest place on Earth” due to lack of rainfall throughout years).
