Calexico is a city in Imperial County, California, United States. The population was 909 at the 2010 census. Calexico is located on the San Joaquin River and is part of the Greater Fresno metropolitan area. The name "Calexico" means "place of abundance." The first known inhabitants of what is now Calexico were Mono Indians. In 1846, prospector George Hearn discovered gold near present-day Calexico while exploring for mines in Northern California. By 1860, mining had become so extensive in this area that gold miners began to settle here and the town started to become known as "the most productive goldfield in America". In 1886, James Wickersham founded the Victoria Hotel and Store in downtown Calexico to provide travelers with needed supplies and services while they were traveling through this region. Soon after, other hotels followed suit and by 1888 there were over 20 hotels in town serving travelers from all around America. Today, many of these hotels still stand proud as symbols of its history - some have been turned into museums or are used as Lodging facilities by locals and tourists alike. In 1892 local rancher John Sutter established an agricultural center called Sutter's Stagecoach Station which became one of the largest cattle ranches west of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This years marked an important Turning Point for Calexico because it allowed for more people to move into this small town which was then home to around 350 families living within a radius of three miles (500 meters). This influx of new residents helpedurbate life in town and created a sense of community which has continued today
In 1846, the Mexican War of Independence began. The United States claimed California for its own government, and in 1847 it acquired the land west of the Sierra Madre Mountains. This included present-day Calexico County. In 1850, Mexico ceded Alta California to the United States as part of a peace treaty ending the Mexican–American War.
