Calexico, California is a city located in the Mexican state of Baja California. It is the county seat of San Diego County and it was founded on October 29, 1847 by American settlers after they were expelled from Santa Fe by Mexico. The town was named for Captain John Calexico who fought in the Mexican-American War. As of 2010, the population of Calexico was 83,979. The first permanent settlement in what would become Calexico was made on May 12, 1848 when three men from New Orleans founded a small community called El Paso del Norte to trade with local Native Americans. The men built a log cabin that served as their home until 1850 when they moved to what is now known as Mission San Diego de Almagro which had been established by Franciscan missionaries prior to Mexico's independence from Spain. In 1851 Emperor Agustín I issued Order No. 1 prohibiting slavery within Mexican territory and free black people living outside of Texas were allowed entry into Baja California under special privileges granted to them by Francisco Javier Lorente y Oñate y Valdez who served as its governor between 1849 and1858. This order led to many African Americans crossing the border into Baja California seeking freedom, but most did not stay long because life inside Mexico was much harder than life back home in Louisiana or Florida. On September 7, 1861 during the American Civil War Confederate forces attacked General Antonio López Bravo's army at La Purísima Concepción killing 6 soldiers and wounding over 50 others before withdrawing eastward across the Rio Grande near Monterrey MOBGQT while Ulysses S Grant's Union Army blockaded their retreat south through central Mexico City resulting in 433 Confederate casualties including general López Bravo himself (known as "The Tiger" for his distinguished combat record).
