The history of ammunition in Calexico, California is not as easily researched as it would be in other parts of the country. However, there are some references that show ammunition being used in the area as early as 1853. In that year, Mexican revolutionaries started a revolt against Spanish rule and began fires throughout the city. This caused a lot of damage and destroyed many property. One of the things that was damaged was an Arsenal where munitions were stored. The Arsenal had been built by José Antonio Vargas and it consisted of two buildings on Third Street. The first building was used for storage and the second for manufacturing cannons and cannonballs. In 1856, Colonel James Fenton purchased land at what is now Speedway Boulevard and Seventh Street in order to build a military post called Fort Tejon. At this location, troops could be stationed to protect ranching interests in the area or they could be sent into battle if needed. Ammunition became an important part of this post because it allowed soldiers to fight targets such as Native Americans without having any fear of getting hurt or killed themselves. After Fort Tejon was built, ammunition also began to be stored at nearby Rancho Santa Anita which later became known as Calexico Army Depot (CAD). This depot functioned as both a storage facility for munitions and also served as a training ground for new recruits for the United States Army. It is interesting to note that CAD wasn’t really built until after World War I when demand from America’s war efforts increased significantly. When it did come online, CAD soon became one of the largest Ammo Storage Facilities in North America! Today, there are still places within Calexico where munitions can still be found! For example, there is an armory located on Fifth Avenue which was once home to American Artillery Company #2 (AAC) – one of several artillery companies stationed within Calexico during its heyday from 1915-1918! Additionally, another armory located near First Street serves today primarily as a commercial entity known as Guns & Ammo Incorporated! Lastly, while not directly related to ammo production but nevertheless worth mentioning nonetheless is Madden Arms Ammunition Corporation which operates out of an old grocery store on Fourth Street!
