In 1887, when Southern Pacific Railroad opened up a line through Ventura County, landowner Wm Haskins donated 20 acres (8 ha) of his Rancho El Camino Ranchero Miwok Indian Reservation to be used as a railroad trackage run through his property. This gave rise to the idea of developing this area into a town. When it became clear that no one wanted to develop this land, Haskins sold it back to Wm. Haskins heirs in 1916 for $10 per acre ($160 per km²). Today's downtown area was started by developer Jack Woolridge in the late 1960s when he developed an area around current day State Route 157 known as Riverside Park which included parts of Herriman High School and East Middle School; today these areas are home to several large retailers including Macy's Department Store and Sears Holdings Corporation . A major development project which took place during the 1990s was called Midtown Center which aimed at revitalizing downtown with new businesses, residences, schools and more streetscape changes than ever before seen in that part of town . It failed but remains a reminder that redevelopment can happen if done correctly

The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Calabasas in 1769 and they were looking for land that would be suitable for farming purposes. They found enough usable land to start farms but they did not find any water so they built their homes on higher hills or mountains. By 1824, when American troops invaded Mexico to independence from Spain, most of these farmers had left for America because of the high prices of food during that time. A few stayed behind to help build new lives while others moved on with their farms or businesses back home in Mexico City. In 1829, one of these remaining farmers named José Gabriel Moraga started building a small cabin near present-day downtown CalabASa using materials he had acquired from his farm nearby. This simple structure served as the nucleus around which all later development took place within downtownCalabiASaR
The first permanent European settlement in what is now Calabasas County was a group of Spanish Rancho owners who arrived in 1825. The area that became Calabasas was part of the Mexican state of Alta California. In 1848, after Mexico's defeat by United States forces at the Battle of Palo Alto, American settlers began to arrive and build homes along the banks of the Verdugo River.
